Sextil Pușcariu
(b. January 4, 1877, Brașov, Romania – d. May 5, 1948, Bran, Romania)
Sextil Pușcariu was a linguist, a professor, and a politician. Thanks to his prestigious activity, he was also elected member of the Romanian Academy. With studies completed in Braşov, Leipzig, Vienna and Paris, Sextil Puşcariu became a reputed Professor of the University of Cernăuţi.
As an active supporter of the national movement of Romanians in Bukovina, he was elected Vice-President of the Romanian National Council in the province. He also participated in the General Assembly of Bukovina, and voted for the union of the province with Romania. He was part of the delegation mandated to present the Declaration of Union to King Ferdinand I and to the members of the Romanian government.
After 1919, he settled in Cluj where he became the Rector of the University and founded the Romanian Language Museum (1919), the first linguistic institute in Romania.
